As a Controller with BMW of Fairfield, you will provide sales and expense analyses for all departments.  The Controller is responsible to represent the financial condition of the dealership; developing controls necessary for the proper conduct of the business; maintaining accurate records; establishing and maintaining the data processing capabilities to accomplish the dealership’s objectives, all while controlling and safeguarding the assets, maintaining adherence to the accounting policies and procedures; overseeing compliance; managing payroll; handling cost accounting activities; working on financial analysis of the P&L and balance sheet.   

The successful candidate will do the following:

  • Prepare the Daily Operating Control report.

  • Reconcile all bank accounts timely.

  • Manage accurate reporting of vehicle floor plans and corresponding payoffs.

  • Develop and maintain an effective cash management system.

  • Review and compare expense trends vs. industry benchmarks.

  • Coordinate the monthly review of all scheduled accounts and approve necessary adjustments.

  • Approve adjustments to inventory accounts.

  • Responsible for ensuring the timely collection of all receivables including contracts in transit.

  • Maintain loss reserves for contingent liabilities and trade receivables.

  • Prepare short and long-term profit projections.

  • Coordinate annual audit (or review) and physical inventory.

  • Establish and administer a loss review program.

  • Automate all possible systems and establish controls.

  • Account for all documents, ensure that none are missing.

  • Provide financial analyses as needed.

  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings. 

  • Manage the purchase of property and liability insurance.

  • Recruit and train new team members of departmental processes.

  • Responsible for continued development and training of departmental employees.

  • Provide regular coaching to employees, allow the opportunity for feedback, correct poor behavior, and follow performance management standards.

  • Actively listen and respond to peer and leadership questions.

  • Practice safe work habits, follow the company’s safety policies.

  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by management.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Good understanding of GAAP and other accounting principles.

  • Strong knowledge of MS Office and familiarity with relevant accounting software (Quickbooks, bench, etc.)

  • Maintain effective team member relations.

  • Ability to maintain emotional control in stressful situations.

  • Contribute to building a positive team spirit; supports everyone’s efforts to succeed.

  • Ability to adapt and support new processes and changes to help in employee and customer satisfaction.

  • Must maintain a clean, safe working environment at all times.

  • Possess outstanding work ethic.

Education, Experience, and Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.

  • 5+ years experience in accounting.

  • 5+ years experience in the auto industry (preferred)

  • Experience in DealerTrack preferred.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

  • Must possess and maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

  • Ability to speak clearly so listeners can understand, as well as the ability to understand the speech of another person.

  • Adequate physical ability including sufficient manual dexterity, including the ability to operate computers, tablets, phones, key boxes, and other office machines to perform the required job functions. 

  • Visual acuity to see details of objects that are less than a few feet away.   Requires extended screen time, including reading and entering information on multiple computer screens.

  • Must be able to sit or stand in a stationary position for extended periods of time.  

  • Must be able to climb into and out of cars numerous times each day.

  • Requires frequent reaching, bending, repetitive hand movements, twisting, standing, walking, sitting, squatting, pushing, and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift.

  • Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted.

  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions in both summer and winter.

  • Regular, punctual attendance is required.

Work Environment:

  • This position operates in a professional dealership environment.

  • Evening and Saturday work will be required as job duties demand.  Scheduled shifts will be determined by the manager, with rotating shifts throughout the workweek.

  • Must maintain a clean, safe working environment at all times.

  • Must perform duties in all weather conditions.
